Ways of working now and post-lockdown

Ways of working, now and post-lockdown

Remote working has worked well for many people, but less well for others. Third sector press reports high levels of stress in workers, but reporting in mainstream press has generally skipped over the different issues in the VCSE and public sectors: for example much of our work being deeply relational which can be difficult to replicate online, beneficiaries not having access to online services, or that we are bringing trauma into our homes.

Online survey and report
+ optional follow up of individual staff or volunteers
Facilitated workshop

This package of work will help you and your team to think about ongoing ways of working and can include thoughts about the immediate future and / or what happens when people who have been away return to the workplace.  You can have just the survey or just the workshop, or combine both.  It can be combined with a webinar or online workshop around the psychology of working effectively and to promote optimal wellbeing.

The advantages of having an external consultant helping you are that people can be more likely to say things they would be worried saying to a manager, it can provide independent evidence for needed changes and suggestions for things you may not have thought of, and it enables managers to get involved with the conversation on more equitable terms with your teams than if also having to facilitate a discussion.

It includes:
  • An initial discussion to clarify the focus and scope of the work and who is to be included.
  • An online survey asking what is and isn't working currently, what would make things better for the organisation, staff and volunteers, and beneficiaries, what people would like to keep or change post-lockdown.
  • Optional follow up of specific survey responses for more information - this may be useful where you anticipate that there might be a high level of stress*.
  • A facilitated workshop that picks up issues from the survey and uses participative methods to involve people in designing new ways of working, now and in the future.
The report will contain:
  • A summary of responses from the survey plus additional telephone conversations if appropriate (reported anonymously) around what is and isn't working and suggestions for the future.
  • A summary of workshop discussions about how to organise work in the near and distant future.  This will be based on information from the survey if this option is chosen to enable deeper conversations.
  • Further ideas and suggestions from Ideas to Impact about future working.
  • Links to relevant research, evidence and resources to help you.
* This is intended to pick up problems from a management perspective and is not therapeutic - Ideas to Impact will discuss with you options for support for people who are particularly struggling.  This option also involves asking people to give their names as they fill in the survey - we will discuss pros and cons of this versus anonymity when setting the survey up.
