Volunteer to employee: understanding the voluntary sector and getting the most from your volunteering
Are you already volunteering in the voluntary sector and want to use and develop your experience to find employment?
This will be a lively and interactive session where you can find out more about how the voluntary sector is structured and operates and meet others in a similar situation to share experiences and ideas. You will consider the range of job roles within the sector and identify those you are particularly interested in, identifying what attributes, skills and experience you already have, what you still need to gain, and who can help you.
By the end of this three-and-a-half-hour session you will have:
Considered your reasons for volunteering and have identified the knowledge, skills and experience you’ve already gained that will help in moving into employment.
Understood the structure and purpose of the voluntary sector, how it is regulated, and the range of organisations that make up the sector.
Considered how individual organisations are funded and structured, including their values, how they plan, how they demonstrate impact, and what information you can get from their website and other publications to help with your job applications.
Identified the different job roles in the voluntary sector and the knowledge, skills, experience and attributes that are required and how these fit with your values and aspirations.
Understood how job recruitment works in the voluntary sector and have reviewed typical job descriptions and person specifications for the types of voluntary sector roles that are of interest to you, including identifying attributes already gained and those that are needed (you can bring job descriptions and person specifications of the types of jobs you are interested in, or a selection will be provided).
Started to develop a personal action plan about how to use volunteering experience to move into employment.
