How asking ‘Is it a bug or a feature?’ will help you with time management

How often have you heard something like that or said it yourself? The interruption might be clients with crises, people returning phone calls you made a while ago, or for managers, staff needing support. It’s easy to nod along in agreement, and to sympathise as you have the same problems. Sometimes though I think, “Hang on a minute, that's not an interruption from your job, that is your job!”
One of the reasons that people are late is apparently that they don’t build enough time into their journeys to cope with things going wrong, they are optimistic that it will be a good day: the train will turn up on time, there won’t be any traffic jams, or they will be able to find the venue easily from the map provided. We can’t easily predict the days things will go wrong with our travel in the same way we can’t easily predict on which days things will go wrong with our carefully planned out work day.
Asking, ‘Is this a bug?’ – something that is going wrong that is outside the job that can be addressed, ‘Or is it a feature?’ – something that is a normal part of your job that you need to make time for, can help you to decide what to do.
A bug might be something like people somehow getting through to you on the phone outside a helpline opening hours, a photocopier that repeatedly breaks down, staff who come to you with the same problem again and again. These are things that need addressing at their source and eliminating either completely or at least partially.
A feature is something that is part of your normal job, such as dealing with client crises when this is what your service is set up to do, answering media enquiries in relation to a topical event that promotes your activities, supporting volunteers whilst they are running an advice session. You may not know when or how often it’s going to happen, but it’s part of the role. Whether something is a bug or a feature might depend on how your service is set up, a feature in one organisation might be a bug in another.

Either individually or as part of a group, identify the things in your organisation (or life) that stop you ‘getting on with your work’. Split them into lists (you may also have some things that need further discussion to decide which list they go into).
If it’s a bug work out what you can do to reduce or eliminate it.
If it’s a feature work out how you can build time into your schedule for this and to accept that it is actually the work and not a distraction from the work, just accepting this can go a long way to help.
Review on a regular basis to see how it’s going.
